START BUTTON
Press Start: The Power of Beginning
For anyone who has ever picked up a controller or tapped a screen, one thing is universal: The Start Button.
No matter the genre whether it’s a high-stakes console mission or a simple mobile puzzle nothing happens until you signal your intent. Once you hit that button, the mission begins.
Life is the ultimate game. We press "start," and suddenly we are thrust into a reality filled with uncertainty. Much like a game, life unfolds in levels. Each stage presents a specific task; once you overcome one challenge, the next immediately follows. While some of us have many levels and others have few, the goal remains the same: navigate the obstacles until the mission is accomplished.
Leveling Up in the Real World
In a video game, you might have a map or a walkthrough. In reality, the challenges are heavier, and the "walkthroughs" look a little different. To navigate our levels, we often rely on:
Faith and Guidance: Seeking strength through prayer and spiritual direction.
The "Players" Before Us: We find guidance from those who have already cleared the levels we are currently stuck on. They may not be there to physically move our feet, but they leave behind "cheat codes" in the form of books, shared experiences, and hard-won wisdom.
The Law of the Root
Everything we see today started as something small and hidden. Roots must take hold before a tree can grow; a child must babble before they can speak. This universal truth is woven into the proverbs of almost every culture:
Greek: "The beginning is half of the whole." (Aristotle)
African: "By crawling, a child learns to stand." A reminder that we must master small, foundational steps before we can run.
European: "In creating, the only hard thing is to begin."
The "Game Over" Fallacy
One thing you must accept is that the journey will not be smooth. There will be glitches, mistakes, and failures.
Think back to the games you’ve played. How many times did you fail a level only to hit "Replay"? Sometimes you have to try two, three, or ten times before you find the rhythm to pass. In life, failing a level doesn't mean the game is over; it just means you're gaining the experience points needed to win.
As the Chinese proverb says: "All things are difficult before they are easy." Patience and perseverance are your greatest power-ups during those challenging initial stages.
The hardest part of any journey isn't the middle or the end it's the friction of the first step. But once you start, the path begins to clear.
The screen is lit up. The cursor is blinking.
Press the start button now.
If this post gave you the spark you needed to finally take that first step, I’d love to hear about it. Hit reply or leave a comment, and let's encourage each other to keep playing.

Amazing piece from start to finish! Beautifully written, Noni!
I love this analogy! I often use a video game analogy to describe life but it seems to cause existential crises in others. Yours on the other hand, was perfectly said! ❤️
